Land Aid Stuart

Many young people in the UK are facing a tough future. It is estimated that there will be 3.5 million children living in poverty by 2020 - that's more than 1 in 4. Around 1 million young people are not in employment, education or training (NEET) - at least 1 in 7. And each year around 10,000 vulnerable 16-18 year olds exit the care system.

For those struggling with homelessness, unemployment or a lack of opportunities, the challenges of a rapidly changing world are, quite simply, magni?ed. Over 50% of homeless young people have been excluded from school, 40% have experienced abuse at home and 33% self-harm. A third of homeless young people have also been in care. Over a third of care leavers are NEET, and only 6% of care leavers go into Higher Education.

LandAidinvests over £1 million every year in projects that support disadvantaged children and young people across the UK. www.landaid.org.

Stuart is working in collaboration with Clyde Shopping Centre to help raise funds and awareness for LandAid by cycling from Turkey through Greece and Italy finishing at the Italian Alps on the boarder of Switzerland and France over 1400 miles if you want to help us raise funds for this great cause please log on to https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/stuartcarmichael1 and sponsor Stuart Carmichael.

The International CSR Excellence Awards are presented to companies that have a heart: caring companies that use their privileged position to help their colleagues, communities, customers, the environment and the less fortunate.

Our first award was in the Community Commitment Small Businesses category. Clyde Shopping Centre launched a competition called School Shout, to provide £5,000 of digital equipment for one lucky primary school as a way of helping to integrate technology into the classroom; and every participating school received a digital camera.

Our second award was for our continuing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of Clyde Shopping Centre. Initiatives in waste management, energy reduction, biodiversity and water management have in recent years seen the Centre reduce its carbon footprint by 29%, electricity consumption by 32% and waste costs by 35%.

We won a Gold Star Award!!!

Clyde Shopping Centre has won a Gold Star Award for recycling.

Clyde Shopping Centre helps to make shopping Greener!

Clyde Rocket

Clyde Shopping Centre has recently taken delivery of the unit which will help us meet their Zero Waste Scotland requirements. Our aim is to process all the food retail outlets left over  food waste through the system.

At only 15 minutes drive from Glasgow City Centre and with several million visitors per year the 2013 Green Apple Gold Award winners are keen to deal with their food waste as sustainably as possible. With the delivery of the Tidy Planet Rocket Clyde's customers will now be doing their bit to make the planet a greener place without even knowing it!

Clyde Shopping Centre is already winners of the Bronze Standard for recycling in the "Green Apple Awards" sought new and improved methods of increasing their already high environmental aspirations.

We having already reduced its carbon footprint by 29% recently by active management programmes, is to start the implementation of rainwater harvesting and water management systems at the centre. Recycling rates are high with a dedicated Recycling Bank on site.

Problem

With eleven different eateries on site at the Clyde Shopping Centre, including famous names, McDonalds, Costa, Subway and Domino's Pizza and with footfall to the centre so high with its city centre proximity, there's no doubt there's a good mix of wastes but a lot of it too.

Solution

To deal with these wastes Clyde Shopping Centre opted for an onsite vessel composting systems. Combined with a purchase of a wood chipper for dealing with wooden pallets, the shopping centre can now not only recycle its food left overs, but some of the wooden pallets as well.

Since the installation of the Rocket Composter the shopping centre has now managed to increase overall recycling rates to 96% and has won a Golden Award in the Green Apple Environmental Awards for its continued environmental performance increases.

Andrew Forrester, from Clyde Shopping Centre commented, "The rocket was the next step in our recycling strategy to enable us to have a sustainable, self-sufficient recycling system. As well as complying with new legislations coming into force and the financial benefits, the rocket allows us full control of the waste collection ensuring a well-organized operation. In addition it also fits in with our CSR Policy, the end result being the compost produced which is then used on the landscaped in and around the Centre, our recycling systems has become more attractive with the local schools to come along and see the processes when doing projects on the environmental/recycling issues."
